Like the last drops
of whiskey
I shake my words
into this poem;
I’m a man taken to drink
at the cost of his family and job –
One round for the house
and one for the Pope and
very last call
to the Devil.

This is heartbreaking, and I really like the title. Not a last call at the depressing dive bar, but a last, lackadaisical call for sympathy, maybe even a helping hand.

There is an older movie called Keeping the Faith. This poem could be read by the priest who walks into the bar at the beginning of the movie. It’s that good, q!
